Notes on running small, predictable systems
This site collects short practical notes from our team: how we build and operate networks for small offices, what we measure, and which trade-offs we accept.
What we work on
- Office and branch networking, from cabling to routing policy.
- Monitoring that answers questions instead of producing dashboards nobody reads.
- Backup and recovery drills — tested, not assumed.
- Documentation that survives staff changes.
Recent note: measuring the boring parts
Most outages we are called for are not exotic. They are a full disk, an expired certificate, a route that was changed for a good reason and never rolled back. Our rule of thumb: if nobody can answer "what would break if this changed" in one sentence, it is not documented well enough.
We keep a small set of checks that run every few minutes and page a human only when something is actually wrong. False alarms are more expensive than missing a minor warning.
